Japan – Where Tradition Embraces the Modern Era

Japan is a country that cherishes its rich tradition.  This holding onto the past has given it the strength and focus to survive and meet the challenges following a war that almost destroyed its very fabric.  However, the Japanese knew that to exist in a modern world, they would have to also include the new culture and technology of the west.  This conscious integration of old and new has provided this island country with a sense of a unique perspective in this ever changing world

The theme of this gallery is to showcase this duality of  their culture.  After living several years in the Tokyo area, it became my photographic challenge to capture these two faces of Japan – their deep respect of their past as well as their appreciation of the customs of other cultures.
