Japan is a country that has always cherished its rich traditions. This honoring of the past has given it the strength and focus to survive and meet the many challenges it has faced through the years. After the historic destruction of the war, Japan knew it had to rebuild and exist in the modern world. This would involve the incorporation of aspects of foreign cultures and technologies of the west. This conscious integration of old and new has provided this island country with a unique perspective on the importance of custom in the face of change.
The theme of this gallery is to showcase this duality of their culture. After living several years in the Tokyo area, it became my photographic challenge to capture these two faces of Japan – their deep respect of their past as well as their appreciation of the customs of other cultures.
