Presently: For the past almost five years I have been a math substitute teacher at Glenelg and Marriotts Ridge High Schools for two to three days per week. I have also used my photography skills to create two school FB pages, Gladiator Life with 286 posts consisting of 13,208 images and Mustang Students with 17 posts and 625 images. The photos depict my young students in their various school activities so they and their families can witness the true beauty of American high school life.
Teacher of the Year
In the early 90’s I was fortunate enough to be selected as Howard County’s Teacher of the Year and then selected as a finalist for Maryland Teacher of the Year by Maryland Public Television.
Kanagawa International Association
My state, Maryland, and Kanagawa, Japan are Sister-States. Each year KIA selects one teacher for a work-study program. The project I proposed was to study math education in Japanese high schools. I observed classes, interviewed teachers, students, and even the superintendent of schools.
“Just English I & II”
While in Kanagawa, Japan in the late 80’s, two Japanese friends and I wrote two translation books. The theme was to assist young Japanese students while studying in the United States. Both books were published and could be found in the local bookstores.
Georgetown University
I spent two summers teaching at Georgetown University in a special international program for students from all over the world. The students were presented with college level course work designed to aid in their transition to studying in the United States.
Howard Community College
Project Access – I was one of the founding teachers for Project Access at Howard Community College. This was a federally funded summer program designed to assist students with special needs.
Senior Adjunct Faculty -Over a ten year plus time period, I taught a variety of college level math courses ranging from Elementary Praxis Review to Pre-Calculus.
Military Service
During the late 60’s, I served in U.S. Army and served almost three years in Southeast Asia.
Travels
Lived almost twenty years at various times of my life overseas while visiting approximately 50 countries.
In Conclusion
Teaching mathematics is my vocation, my passion, and my reason for getting out of bed each morning. I cannot imagine a classroom not being part of my life. However, photography has provided me with a way to channel a creative side of my brain during those non-student hours. Recording the wonders of Asia, Europe, Australia, and Africa has been both a joy and a challenge. However, capturing the culture of a high school to share with my students and their families has been my greatest joy.
